Rinnai ducted air conditioning troubleshooting guide for clients

Work through the relevant symptom below before calling for service. Most common issues can be resolved without a technician visit.

Check these first

  • Has it been turned off in the last 3 minutes? The unit has a built-in protection delay — wait at least 3 minutes before restarting.
  • Check the power supply is switched on at the switchboard.
  • Check if a circuit breaker has tripped — reset it if so. If it trips again, call us.
  • Is a timer active on the controller? Check and turn the timer off.
  • Replace the batteries in the remote control if it's not responding.

Check mode and settings

  • Make sure the unit is set to COOL or HEAT mode, not FAN ONLY. In fan-only mode, air circulates without any heating or cooling.
  • Check your set temperature — it should be lower than the current room temperature for cooling (or higher for heating).

Check the air filter

  • A dirty filter is the most common cause of poor performance. Check and clean it — filters should be inspected every 2–4 weeks.
  • Not sure where your filter is? Contact your installer for guidance.

Check the space

  • Make sure all doors and windows are closed while the system runs.
  • Check that nothing is blocking the supply air grilles or return air grille.
  • Close curtains or blinds on sunny sides of the home to reduce heat load.
  • Reduce heat sources where possible — appliances, electronics, lighting.

Note: On very hot or cold days it may take longer than usual to reach your set temperature. This is normal.

Why this happens

  • The system may briefly switch to fan mode to prevent frost forming on the unit. It will automatically return to your selected mode once the temperature stabilises — no action needed.
  • If the set temperature has been reached, the compressor turns off and the fan may continue to run. It restarts when the temperature drifts again. This is normal operation.

Noises that are normal

  • Water flowing or gurgling from the indoor unit — this is refrigerant moving through the system.
  • Low hissing during operation — refrigerant gas flowing through the indoor and outdoor units.
  • Hissing when the system starts, stops, or defrosts — refrigerant changing direction. Normal.
  • Varying sounds from the outdoor unit — fan speed is automatically adjusted for performance.

If you hear loud banging, clanking, or grinding — turn the unit off and call Frazer Air on (03) 9465 3533. Don't attempt to investigate yourself.

Why this happens

  • White mist after the unit restarts in heating mode is completely normal — it's moisture from the defrost cycle evaporating in cold air.
  • Mist may also appear briefly when the unit starts in a very humid environment. This clears once indoor humidity reduces.

Common causes

  • The unit can absorb and re-emit household odours — cooking, smoke, furniture. This generally clears over time.
  • A musty smell usually means the filter needs cleaning. Clean or replace it and check whether the smell clears.

Check your operating mode

  • Fan speed can't be adjusted in AUTO or DRY mode — the system controls it automatically. Switch to COOL, HEAT, or FAN ONLY to adjust manually.
  • Temperature can't be adjusted in AUTO or FAN ONLY mode. Switch to COOL or HEAT mode to set a specific temperature.

Check zone settings

  • Set your zone configuration before starting the system, not after.
  • The return air grille must always be in a conditioned (open) zone — don't close off the zone it's located in.
  • Close doors to unconditioned areas to isolate them from the rest of the system.
  • Don't shut down more zones than your installer specified as the minimum — this can cause the whole system to shut down.

Check your installer handover notes for your system's minimum and maximum zone settings. Not sure? Give us a call.

⚠ Turn the unit off immediately and call us if you notice:

  • A burning smell coming from the unit
  • Loud or abnormal sounds like banging or grinding
  • The power cord feels warm or is visibly damaged
  • A circuit breaker repeatedly trips when the unit runs
  • The unit has been submerged or exposed to flooding
